Cosmetic Fillers
Restylane® and Júvederm™ are the most common and effective fillers used in our office. They are made of a substance called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid gel is an ideal substance for filling in skin irregularities, furrows, and wrinkles. The hyaluronic acid is not derived from an animal source, but is made by fermentation of bacteria. This makes allergic reactions extremely unlikely and skin testing unnecessary. Restylane® and Júvederm™ may be used to fill in superficial lines in the upper lip, deeper furrows in the naso-labial folds and marionette grooves, which are creases at the sides of the lips. They may also be used to enhance lip volume and shape and may be used after BOTOX® treatment in the deep furrows between the eyebrows. There is only a little swelling following these injections and the beneficial effect is immediate. Although, up to 50% of the hyaluronic acid will remain after one year, most patients return for more when they begin to see the lines reappearing in about 6 months.
Before the Procedure
We will review your medical history prior to the procedure and examine your face to decide the most effective injection sites. Areas of cosmetic concern to you will be discussed.
Digital photographs are taken in order to determine the amount of improvement afterwards.
Filler Injections
Cosmetic filler injections may be performed with either no anesthesia, topical anesthetic cream, local anesthesia (dental injection in the mouth) or under I.V. sedation. Only a very small sting is typically felt when the injections are made, however each individual’s tolerance for these injections may vary.
Post-Operative Information
After the procedure, patients may experience swelling and/or bruising around the injected areas. Ice should be applied to the face, after which normal activities can be resumed.
